Starting signal for new E-Scrap-Recycling Plant in England

MeWa Recycling Maschinen und Anlagenbau GmbH from Gechingen received award of contract for the erection of a new electrical and electronic recycling plant in England. The customer, the British Wincanton logistics company, will be completing the preparative building works soon. The delivery and assembly is projected for October.

Only in March of 2008, the British waste management contractor Wincanton initiated the permit procedure for the recycling plant for electrical and electronic scrap in England. The permit for the recycling management of some 100,000 annual tons of used household appliances, personal computers or electronic entertainment appliances has now been granted.

Construction of office complex and recycling processing hall has recently been started on site in the English Midlands. As soon as they will have progressed sufficiently, the Gechingen MeWa Recycling company will integrate a fully automatic recycling plant into the hall complex. “The special feature in operation will be the fact that only one machine is required for the disintegration of electrical and electronic appliances”, MeWa CEO Helmut Oberguggenberger explains the future advantages of the state-of-the-art recycling site.

The complete comminution process will be assumed by the patented Querstromzerspaner QZ 2500 HD of the Gechingen engineering company. In subsequent processing stages, various kinds of metals, circuit boards, cables and batteries, high-quality plastics as well as small magnets will be classified in fully automated operation. “Merely four to six staff per shift will be required for system operation and guarantee of trouble-free processing of an hourly ten tons of input material”, Helmut Oberguggenberger emphasizes the efficiency of the plant.

Only two years ago, the trans-European Wincanton Group initiated operation of a MeWa recycling plant in Northern England. This plant was already designed according to the EU regulations regarding the complete recycling of electrical and electronic used equipment (WEEE directive). This directive was translated into national law in England on July 1, 2007.

„Since the start of the EU directive, Wincanton has assumed a pioneering role in using the recycling plant technology leading in the field”, Wincanton managers Ewan Jackson and Gordon Scott emphasize the cooperation with MeWa Recycling Co. The reliability and efficient operation of the already installed plant, in particular, moved the Britons to enter into a new cooperation with the German plant engineering company.

The new plant in Daventry / Northamptonshire will be doubling the current capacities of the recycling service company in this segment resulting in a further enhancement of their being able to offer on a nation-wide basis the complete recycling service rang from collection and classification to conditioning. “With this second plant, we will continue to support the manufacturers of equipment affected by legislation to be able to meet their responsibilities towards the environment”, Wincanton managers are sure.

Delivery and start of assembly of the plant is projected for October of 2008. Wincanton are aiming at an initiation of complete operation of the plant at a total investment volume of more than 5 million Pound Sterling (6.3 million Euro) by early next year.
